There is a similar species, Bibio anglicus.

B. hortulanus has white hairs on the lateral edge of the thorax, B. anglicus hasn’t.

And there is a difference in the wing veins.

B. anglicus flies also earlier (April, first half of May) than B. hortulanus (May).
